What is rubber?

Rubber is an elastic material, which means it can be stretched and then return to its original shape. This property makes rubber very useful in many different products where flexibility and durability are important. There are two main types of rubber: natural and synthetic. Natural rubber is extracted from latex, which is a sap from rubber trees. Synthetic rubber, on the other hand, is produced chemically, typically from petroleum products, and often has improved properties such as higher resistance to heat, oil, and chemicals.

The material is not made solely of natural rubber, but is a mixture of several different substances. Typically, rubber contains natural rubber, fillers, plasticizers, and chemical additives, which together give the material its strength, flexibility, and durability. The composition can vary depending on the properties desired in the finished product.

The production of rubber involves several steps. For natural rubber, the process begins with the extraction of latex from trees, after which it is coagulated, dried, and processed. The rubber then often undergoes a process called vulcanization, in which it is heated with, for example, sulfur to improve its strength and elasticity.

Overall, rubber is a versatile material with many applications, precisely because it can be tailored—through both its composition and manufacturing process—to meet various technical requirements.

Durable and flexible rubber solutions

Rubber comes in several different types of materials, including natural rubber, EPDM, neoprene, NBR, SBR, silicone rubber, Viton, and butyl, each of which has different properties. The choice of material depends on the required properties. We offer cutting, punching, molding, extruding, or vulcanizing rubber materials based on your specific design.

At AAG, we assist you during the design and development phase. We understand the properties of rubber, you know your industry, and together we’ll find the solution that’s right for your project.
